This feature thread tracks the development and enhancement of Shopify's capabilities for predicting and managing delivery dates for merchants and buyers. Initial efforts focused on building a platform for third-party logistics (3PL) providers to upload their pre-computed delivery dates. This involved creating new GraphQL APIs for 3PLs to integrate with the core Shopify platform and displaying these dates on product detail pages and at checkout. The Shopify Fulfillment Network (SFN) team developed a system to calculate and upload SFN-specific delivery dates, considering factors like inventory proximity, product characteristics (heavy, bulky, dangerous goods), fulfillment center processing times (including operating days, holidays, and capacity), and shipping carrier transit times (including pickup schedules, capacity limits, and time in transit). The system generates multiple schedules based on fulfillment center availability and product characteristics, mapping SKUs to these schedules for efficient real-time lookups. The displayed delivery date is then used during order fulfillment to route orders to appropriate warehouses and shipping carriers.
