Gamified Retail Experiences with IoT and POS Integration

Shopify has developed and enhanced capabilities for creating unique, gamified retail experiences by integrating IoT devices with their Point of Sale (POS) system. This involves building custom hardware-software solutions, such as a gamified treadmill that rewards participants with store credit, and developing POS UI extensions to seamlessly redeem these rewards. The system leverages custom software to process real-time data from IoT devices, manage game states, and integrate with the Shopify admin. This post details the implementation of a treadmill that prints store credit, including hardware (manual treadmill, POS hardware, receipt printer, displays, server, iPads), software (Python script for FTMS data, Remix app for displays and control panel, POS UI extension for redemption), and the gamification logic for pace-based rewards. The POS UI extension decouples redemption from the treadmill experience and enhances customer data by creating/updating records with session metadata.
