Shuffle Algorithm Enhancement

2 posts · May 2015 – Oct 2025

What this trail covers

Spotify has evolved its Shuffle feature by introducing a 'Fewer Repeats' mode. This mode preserves statistical randomness while improving perceived variety by scoring multiple random sequences based on recent listening history and selecting the freshest one. A 'Standard Shuffle' mode remains available for pure randomness. The system is being refined to balance freshness, artist diversity, and playlist size without impacting latency. This post details the application of property-based testing to the algorithm and the introduction of a new scoring mechanism based on recency of play.

All Spotify trails
  1. Shuffle: Making Random Feel More HumanThis post details the introduction of the 'Fewer Repeats' mode for Spotify's Shuffle feature. The new system generates multiple random sequences and scores them based on how recently tracks have been played, selecting the sequence with the highest 'freshness score'. This aims to improve perceived variety and reduce repetition without altering the underlying statistical randomness. The 'Standard Shuffle' mode, using Mersenne Twister, remains available for pure randomness. Future refinements will focus on balancing freshness, artist diversity, and playlist size without impacting latency.
  2. Generating test cases so you don’t have toThis post details the application of property-based testing using the RapidCheck framework to the Spotify player's track sequencing module. It demonstrates how to write property-based tests for pure functions and for stateful systems using model-based testing. The author successfully identified three bugs in the player's logic, including a significant one related to state transitions and command execution.
