Unleash Event PWA

What this trail covers

The Unleash Event PWA is a real-time, progressive web application built on Atlassian's stack to serve as the central hub for the Unleash 2026 event. It allows attendees to browse the agenda, manage personal schedules, watch session recordings, participate in hands-on challenges, interact with an AI guide, and contribute to production features by shipping code live during the event. The architecture leverages Jira Cloud as the system of record for event data, a thin stateless service for elevated privileges, and Jira Automation for scheduled tasks. The app employs a state machine for readiness, a durable local outbox for capturing user intent, and a materialized view for the leaderboard. Performance optimizations have been implemented to reduce load times and API call duplication.

  1. Building a real-time PWA on Atlassian's own stackThis post details the architecture and engineering challenges of building the Unleash Event PWA. It highlights the use of Jira Cloud as the system of record, a thin stateless service for elevated privileges, and Jira Automation for scheduled jobs. Key engineering challenges addressed include modeling event data in Jira, designing for eventual consistency with a state machine and durable local outbox, supporting push notifications via Jira workflows, gamifying the leaderboard with a split read/write model, and initial performance optimizations based on HAR files and Chrome Performance traces. The post also introduces the concept of 'readiness as a state machine' and 'capturing user intent with a durable local outbox' with simplified code examples.
