Kubernetes Network Stall Debugging

2 posts · Aug 2017 – Nov 2019

What this trail covers

This feature thread tracks the evolution of debugging and resolving network performance issues within Kubernetes environments. Initially, the focus was on identifying sporadic latency in services running on Kubernetes. This post details the systematic debugging process to pinpoint network stalls, ruling out application-level issues and progressively isolating the problem to the interaction between Kubernetes nodes and the underlying network infrastructure. It covers the use of tools like Vegeta and the selection of Calico as the network provider. The migration of github.com and api.github.com to Kubernetes clusters on the metal cloud is a significant milestone, involving the setup of Kubernetes clusters, deployment tooling, and a review lab for testing pull requests. The effort also included container networking with Calico and manual Kubernetes cluster provisioning.
