This feature thread tracks the evolution of GitHub Issues, focusing on enhancing issue management capabilities. Initially, issues provided a flexible way to track bugs and plan features. Over time, tools like labels, milestones, and task lists were added. This post details the introduction of 'sub-issues,' a new hierarchical structure allowing users to break down larger issues into smaller, manageable tasks within a single issue. This enables better progress tracking, dependency management, and roll-up of completion status. The implementation uses a dedicated sub-issues table for relationships and a sub-issue list table for aggregated progress, exposed via GraphQL and built with React. Early feedback led to the inclusion of issue number and repository name in the sub-issue list.
