GitLab is evolving its self-managed billing to provide more transparent and prorated charges for user growth. The introduction of Seat Link automates the daily counting of users in connected instances, eliminating the need for manual true-ups and providing prorated quarterly charges. This aims to simplify the renewal process and prevent surprises for customers. Future iterations will focus on further enhancing billing transparency and automation.

  1. How we’re improving self-managed billingIntroduced Seat Link, a feature that automatically sends daily user counts from self-managed instances to GitLab via secure HTTPS. This data enables automated, prorated quarterly charges for user growth, replacing the previous manual true-up model. The initial release of Seat Link will be non-configurable and will not process charges until a future release (tentatively 12.10). Air-gapped or closed network customers will continue to use the existing true-up model.
