What this trail covers

Azure Pipelines provides a comprehensive CI/CD solution for open-source projects, offering unlimited build minutes, 10 parallel pipelines for free, cross-platform build support (Linux, Windows, macOS), scheduled builds, publishing of test results in various formats, and build badges for project READMEs. This enables efficient maintenance, rapid validation of pull requests, and clear visibility into project health for contributors and users. This post introduces the capability for public projects to use Azure Pipelines for free, with unlimited build minutes and 10 parallel jobs.

Nov 2021AzureFunBytes Episode 61 - Deploying to @Azure is one "git push" away with @julienduboisThis post introduces NubesGen, an open-source tool that simplifies the deployment of applications to Azure using GitOps principles. It demonstrates how to generate Azure infrastructure configuration files (Terraform) and GitHub Actions workflows to automate deployments triggered by Git pushes. The post highlights the use of JHipster for application generation and showcases a live coding session to deploy a Java web application to Azure.
Jan 2019Top 5 Open Source Features in Azure PipelinesThis post details how the libgit2 open-source project leverages Azure Pipelines for its CI/CD. Key contributions include: 1. Consolidating CI across Linux, Windows, and macOS onto a single platform, simplifying infrastructure management and reducing costs. 2. Utilizing the free tier for open-source projects, offering unlimited build minutes and 10 parallel pipelines, which significantly speeds up validation of pull requests by running multiple builds concurrently. 3. Implementing scheduled builds for less critical platforms to ensure broader test coverage without impacting PR validation speed. 4. Publishing test results in various formats (JUnit, NUnit, TRX, xUnit) to provide detailed insights into test failures. 5. Using build badges to offer a high-level, at-a-glance view of project health on README files, with customization options for clarity.
Apr 2018VSTS Public Projects Limited PreviewThis post introduces the concept of 'Public Projects' in Visual Studio Team Services (VSTS), enabling anonymous users to view read-only content of a VSTS Team Project. Initially, this includes Build, Release, Git repos, Dashboards, and a subset of Work items. The primary motivation is to support open-source development by allowing community members to view build results and contribute fixes. This extends the existing CI/CD capabilities of Azure Pipelines to a wider audience.
Mar 2018DevOps for IoT with Win10 IoT Core, UWP, and VSTSThis post details the integration of testing for Windows 10 IoT Core devices into Azure Pipelines (VSTS). It highlights the Visual Studio Test Platform's support for Win10 IoT Core, enabling CI/CD workflows for IoT applications. A walkthrough demonstrates setting up a Raspberry Pi 3 with a UWP IoT application and a corresponding test application, and how to configure Visual Studio IDE and VSTS build definitions to build, deploy, and execute tests on the remote device. It confirms that the default UWP build template and VsTest task can be used without modification, and test outcomes are integrated into the build summary.
Apr 2017How to Build & Deploy a Java Web Application using Team Services and AzureThis post details how to integrate Jenkins with Visual Studio Team Services (VSTS) for CI/CD pipelines. It explains two primary integration methods: using web hooks to trigger Jenkins builds from VSTS events (like code pushes) and using a VSTS build task to trigger remote Jenkins jobs, providing real-time build output and feedback within the VSTS interface. The post also highlights the ability to pull build artifacts (e.g., .war files) and test/code coverage files from Jenkins into the VSTS build system for deployment and reporting.

Aug 2016Team Services Integration with Jenkins Jobs, Pipelines, and ArtifactsThis post introduces two new tasks for Azure Pipelines: 'Jenkins Queue Job' and 'Jenkins Download Artifacts'. The 'Jenkins Queue Job' task supports parameterized Jenkins jobs, full Jenkins pipelines, self-signed server certificates, and Jenkins crumb security. It runs via a lightweight agent on the Jenkins server, avoiding inbound firewall rule modifications. The 'Jenkins Download Artifacts' task allows downloading build artifacts from Jenkins into the Azure Pipelines build or release process. Both tasks are open-sourced.
Jul 2016A new Team Services build task to queue Jenkins jobsIntroduced a new build task, 'Jenkins Queue Job', for Azure Pipelines that allows integration with Jenkins to queue and monitor Jenkins jobs. The task is cross-platform, requires no additional build agent dependencies, and adds links to Jenkins builds on the build summary page for traceability. The task is open-sourced.
Dec 2015PHP Build Task from Cory Fowler’s DevOps PHPWorld PresentationThis post details how to integrate a PHP project with Composer into an Azure DevOps CI/CD pipeline. It outlines the steps to create a custom build task for packaging the PHP application using Composer, upload it to Visual Studio Online (VSO), and then configure a build pipeline to utilize this custom task. The post also touches upon setting up on-premises build agents and performing a quick web performance test to verify deployment success. It emphasizes the need for Personal Access Tokens (PATs) for authentication.
